The inaugural Nations Championship has confirmed its host venues for Fiji's home fixtures, with matches scheduled in Cardiff, Liverpool, and Edinburgh. This unusual arrangement presents significant logistical dilemmas for the coaches of England, Wales, and Scotland, who must navigate a demanding travel schedule.
Commercial Strategy Behind Venue Selection
As previously reported, Fiji requested to play their home games outside the Pacific Islands to maximise commercial opportunities for the July fixtures. While South Africa was initially considered, organisers ultimately selected three British stadiums to boost ticket sales and provide additional fixtures for supporters of the involved Home Nations.
Confirmed Fixture Schedule
Fiji will open their campaign against Wales at Cardiff City Stadium on Saturday, 4 July. The following week, they face England at Everton's Hill Dickinson Stadium in Liverpool—marking England's first home game away from Twickenham since a 2019 Rugby World Cup warm-up against Italy in Newcastle. The Pacific Islanders conclude their home leg against Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday, 18 July.
Complex Travel Demands for Opposing Teams
The scheduling creates particularly challenging itineraries for the opposition coaches. England, for example, are due to play South Africa in Johannesburg and Argentina in Santiago del Estero either side of their Fiji fixture. It is understood that head coach Steve Borthwick may consider splitting his squad to manage this demanding schedule.
Scotland face consecutive weeks in Cordoba, Pretoria, and Edinburgh, while Wales will travel between Cardiff, San Juan, and Durban. These extensive journeys raise questions about player welfare and performance optimisation during the competition.
Broader Competition Logistics
Significant logistical challenges remain for the new competition, with a complete schedule still to be confirmed despite the tournament beginning in just months. Japan are reportedly attempting to secure an Australian venue for their 11 July game against Ireland, though they will host both Italy and France in Tokyo around that date.
Broadcasting and Final Arrangements
The Nations Championship will conclude with a finals weekend at Twickenham's Allianz Stadium in November, featuring three double-headers over three days. Every fixture will be broadcast live on ITV, with reports suggesting that permitting mid-game advertisements during the Six Nations and beyond was crucial in securing the broadcaster's investment in the competition.
