Cove Rangers hit with transfer embargo and £5,000 fine

Cove Rangers have been handed a transfer embargo and a financial penalty for failing to pay a player's signing-on fee on time. Scottish Professional Football League bosses took decisive action against the League One club after the Aberdeen-based side neglected to make the payment during 2024.

League authorities came down hard on the Balmoral club, slapping them with a transfer embargo running until the end of May and a £5,000 fine, of which £2,000 has been suspended.

SPFL Disciplinary Tribunal ruling

An official league statement read: "An SPFL Disciplinary Tribunal has imposed a season-long registration embargo on Cove Rangers following a number of rule breaches.

"The William Hill League 1 club admitted at a hearing that it breached SPFL rules by failing to make a historic contractual payment to a player when due and then failed to notify the SPFL that it had been in default of that rule.

"The club was also found to have provided incorrect information to the SPFL when it certified that it had no overdue payables to current or former players as at 31 January 2026.

"Following these rule breaches by the club, the tribunal imposed a registration embargo which will remain in place until 31 May 2027 and a fine of £5,000 (£2,000 of which is suspended). The club has now made full payment to the player involved."

Club response and next steps

The Daily Record claim that the outstanding sum owed to a senior player amounted to a modest four-figure fee, which was missed due to a straightforward administrative error despite being clearly stipulated in the player's contract. The club had sufficient funds to cover the payment and, upon discovering the error, promptly settled the outstanding amount while self-reporting the matter to the SPFL. Notably, the player concerned was entirely unaware that the payment had been missed.

Cove Rangers officials have expressed their dismay at the outcome and are currently weighing up their options. A club statement read: "Cove Rangers FC acknowledges the SPFL's decision concerning a historic contractual payment from 2024 and subsequent reporting matters. The club is disappointed by the severity of the sanctions and is carefully reviewing the decision and considering all available options."

Paul Hartley's side retain the ability to extend contracts for their current squad throughout the embargo period. While they are barred from signing players for transfer fees, they may still bring in free agents, subject to approval from the SPFL board.
