Lee Cattermole has been sacked by National League side Gateshead after just one win in 12 games in his first managerial role. The former Sunderland midfielder leaves the club rooted to the bottom of the table with four points, following a win over Woking and a draw with Solihull Moors.
Club confirms departure
Gateshead confirmed the decision in a statement: "Gateshead Football Club can confirm that the decision has been taken to terminate the contract of First-Team Manager, Lee Cattermole."
The statement added: "The decision follows a series of poor results which have seen the club anchored to the foot of the Enterprise National League table. Assistant Manager, Martin Smith, will also leave the club with immediate effect."
Caretaker appointed
First Team Coach, Ben Clark, will assume the role of Caretaker Manager until further notice. Interim Chairman, Graham Wood said: "The club wishes to thank Lee and Martin for their efforts and wishes them both success in their future careers."
Playing and coaching career
Cattermole spent 10 years at Sunderland between 2009 and 2019, making 233 appearances for the Black Cats. After leaving Sunderland, he spent one season in the Netherlands with VVV-Venlo before retiring.
He began his coaching career with Middlesbrough U18s before joining Bristol Rovers as first-team coach, where he was named caretaker manager four days after joining. Gateshead was the first time Cattermole had held that title outright.
