Brian McDermott to Lead England at Rugby League World Cup
Brian McDermott is set to be officially announced as the new head coach of the England men's national rugby league team later this week, taking over from Shaun Wane ahead of the upcoming Rugby League World Cup in Australia this autumn.
Selection Process and Competition
The Rugby Football League (RFL) conducted interviews with a five-man shortlist last week, which included notable candidates such as Sam Burgess, Brad Arthur, Paul Rowley, and Steve McNamara. McDermott emerged as the standout choice, beating out strong contenders to secure the prestigious role.
Initially, the RFL had targeted Hull KR coach Willie Peters, but his appointment as head coach of the Papua New Guinea Chiefs team for their NRL entry in 2028 led to a broader search. Brad Arthur was considered a strong candidate, but uncertainties over his long-term commitment to Leeds Rhinos influenced the decision.
McDermott's Coaching Career and Achievements
With a distinguished career, McDermott is the most successful coach in Super League history, having guided Leeds Rhinos to eight major honours, including an historic treble in 2015. His coaching journey began with London Broncos, followed by an eight-year tenure at Leeds, where he won every domestic trophy available.
He has also coached Toronto Wolfpack during their promotion-winning season in 2019 and had a brief stint with Featherstone Rovers. Currently serving as an assistant coach at Newcastle Knights in the NRL, McDermott brings extensive experience to the national team.
Challenges and Goals for England
McDermott steps into the role following Shaun Wane's departure earlier this year, after England suffered a series whitewash against the Kangaroos in the Ashes. His primary objective will be to help England lift the Rugby League World Cup, a trophy they have not won in over five decades.
The appointment comes at a critical time as England aims to showcase their strength on the global stage, with the World Cup providing a platform to end their long drought and compete against top-tier nations like Australia.
McDermott's unveiling is scheduled for Thursday, marking a new chapter for England rugby league as they prepare for the autumn tournament with renewed leadership and ambition.
