BBC faces Rugby League fan backlash over reported rights loss

The BBC are facing a backlash from Rugby League fans amid reports that they are set to lose the rights to show the sport next season. Over the last three years, the BBC have shared the rights with Sky Sports. The agreement sees the terrestrial channel showing around 10 Super League games live, as well as the Challenge Cup.

Grand Final broadcast

The Super League Grand Final between Warrington Wolves and Wakefield Trinity was shown live on both Sky Sports and the BBC. The Daily Mail report that the Grand Final will be the last game shown on the BBC for the foreseeable future, with coverage instead split between Sky and DAZN. The broadcaster, however, have said that no final decision has been made.

Fan reaction on social media

Despite that, news of the potential cutback in the coverage of the sport has not gone down well with fans on social media. “That would be a real shame,” one said. “Maybe ITV would be interested or Channel 4.” A second said: “Explore C4 taking over coverage.”

A third added: “I still haven't forgiven the BBC for ruining Doctor Who & Top Gear and cancelling Robot Wars (twice!). I love The Traitors, but if they bin off Rugby League, it's going to be very difficult to justify paying for that TV licence (subscription!).”

“Really worrying report here that BBC cutbacks are threatening Rugby League coverage,” a fourth said. “Even a suggestion that Challenge Cup coverage is under threat.”

A fifth added: “Time for all RL fans to cancel their licence.” A sixth then simply said in jest: “Quick! Buy a TV license.”

Wider BBC cutbacks

The report comes amid reports that the BBC were thinking of a cost-cutting measure that would stop local radio commentaries for away matches of Premier League and EFL games. The suggestion again received backlash from fans, many of whom rely on the local coverage to follow their teams. The BBC have since confirmed that they have taken the decision and are ‘not making any changes to home or away Premiership or EFL commentaries’.
