Jordan Stolz Secures First Olympic Gold with Record-Breaking 1,000m Performance
American speedskater Jordan Stolz has made a stunning start to his Winter Olympics campaign in Milan Cortina, capturing his first gold medal and setting a new Olympic record in the men's 1,000 metres. The 21-year-old from Wisconsin clocked an impressive time of 1 minute and 6.28 seconds, shattering the previous Olympic standard that had stood since 2002—a year before Stolz was even born.
A Dominant Display in the Milano Speed Skating Stadium
Competing in the penultimate pairing at the temporary Milano Speed Skating Stadium, a venue already famed for producing rapid times, Stolz delivered a masterclass performance. While his time did not threaten his own world record of 1:05.37, it underscored the exceptional conditions at the Games. Remarkably, all four long track speedskating races in Milan have so far yielded the fastest times ever recorded at an Olympics, highlighting the competitive intensity.
This victory marks a significant milestone for Stolz, who, as a 17-year-old at the 2022 Beijing Games, finished 14th in the 1,000m and 13th in the 500m. His triumph also ends a 14-year medal drought for the United States in this event, with the last gold coming at the 2010 Vancouver Games when his mentor, Shani Davis, stood atop the podium.
Thrilling Race with Celebrity Spectators
The race itself was a nail-biting affair, watched by speedskating legend Eric Heiden and rapper Snoop Dogg from the stands. Stolz initially pulled ahead of his closest rival, Jenning de Boo of the Netherlands, only for de Boo to briefly take the lead. However, Stolz surged back powerfully in the final corner, crossing the finish line first with an understated pump of his right hand.
De Boo claimed the silver medal, finishing half a second behind Stolz, while China's Zhongyan Ning secured the bronze. A victory lap with the American flag was momentarily delayed as a re-skate was ordered for Joep Wennermars of the Netherlands, who had been bumped during his original heat. However, Wennermars' subsequent attempt fell far short of Stolz's winning time, confirming the American's status as a pre-race favourite.
Quest for Four Gold Medals Begins
With this gold medal secured, Jordan Stolz has boldly launched his quest to win four gold medals at the Winter Olympics in Italy. His record-breaking performance not only cements his place as a rising star in speedskating but also sets the stage for what could be a historic Games for the young athlete. As he eyes three more gold medals, the sporting world watches with anticipation to see if he can achieve this remarkable feat.
