Russell Wins Austrian GP, Cuts Antonelli's Lead to 40 Points

George Russell ended his 112-day wait for a Formula 1 victory by winning the Austrian Grand Prix at the Red Bull Ring on Sunday, finishing 1.6 seconds ahead of Red Bull's Max Verstappen. The win cuts championship leader Kimi Antonelli's advantage from 50 points to 40 with one week until the British Grand Prix.

Russell's Tactical Masterclass

Starting from pole position, Russell held his nerve at the first corner while drama unfolded behind. Lewis Hamilton passed Charles Leclerc for second on lap one, and Antonelli briefly moved into third before running off the road and dropping two places. Verstappen, who crashed in qualifying, gained two positions to take third.

On lap 11, Hamilton and Verstappen traded positions at Turns 3 and 4 before Verstappen ran two wheels onto the gravel at Turn 6. He called for a penalty against Hamilton, but stewards noted the incident without action. Hamilton then pitted for the first of three stops — a strategy that would backfire, promoting Verstappen to second, 5.7 seconds behind Russell.

Strategy Decides the Race

Verstappen pitted on lap 18, Russell the next lap. Verstappen closed on Hamilton again, passing him at Turn 3 before Hamilton retook the position. This time, Verstappen passed Hamilton at Turn 6 by diving underneath the Ferrari. Carlos Sainz's breakdown triggered a Virtual Safety Car, prompting Ferrari to bring Hamilton in for a second time, fitting soft tyres that required another stop. Hamilton dropped to seventh.

Verstappen began closing on Russell, reducing the gap to just over a second by lap 40. Mercedes responded by pitting Russell for a second time. When Verstappen stopped six laps later, he emerged nearly 11 seconds behind. Though Verstappen gained almost 10 seconds over the final 22 laps, he couldn't mount a serious challenge and spent the last lap ensuring Antonelli didn't take second.

Drivers React

"It's incredible to be back on the top step," Russell said. "It has been a little while, so I am going to enjoy it this evening. Max was incredibly quick so kudos to them. It was toasty out there so I am looking forward to a drink now. The tough races test you psychologically, and the last two weekends have been important to remind myself I can do it."

Antonelli admitted: "I was a bit too excited in the first laps and I didn't drive well and made too many mistakes. The pace at the end was very strong so it was a shame I joined the party a little bit late."

Championship Implications

Russell's win moves him ahead of Hamilton in the standings. Hamilton finished fifth and is now 46 points off the championship pace. Oscar Piastri placed fourth, Verstappen's teammate Isack Hadjar sixth, and world champion Lando Norris seventh. The next race is the British Grand Prix at Silverstone on July 6.
