Sofia Goggia Lights Olympic Cauldron in Cortina Following Key Role in Italy's Hosting Success
Italian downhill skier Sofia Goggia took centre stage in Cortina, lighting the cauldron to conclude Friday's opening ceremony for the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics. This honour came after her pivotal involvement in securing the hosting rights for Italy, with retired skiing legends Alberto Tomba and Deborah Compagnoni performing simultaneous ceremonies in Milan.
Goggia's Crucial Contribution to the Olympic Bid
In 2019, Goggia, alongside snowboarder Michela Moioli, delivered a joint speech and performed a synchronized dab before nearly 100 International Olympic Committee members during the voting session for the 2026 Games. Their energetic presentation was later hailed as vital to Milan Cortina's successful bid, helping overcome competition from Sweden by winning over voters with their positive spirit and enthusiasm.
Goggia, who won gold in the downhill at the 2018 Olympics and silver in Beijing 2022 just weeks after a crash in Cortina, is set to compete for more medals in the women's downhill on Sunday. Her relationship with Cortina has been marked by both triumphs and setbacks, including four World Cup downhill victories on the mountain but also missing the 2021 world championships due to injury.
A Night of Celebration for Italian Athletes
The opening ceremony was a significant event for Italian Alpine skiers, with defending overall World Cup champion Federica Brignone serving as one of the host country's flag bearers in Cortina. Olympic curling champion Amos Mosaner, the other flag bearer, humorously carried Brignone on his shoulders during the parade through the town centre, prompting Brignone to remark, "I'm heavy, so I wasn't sure he could carry me."
This moment underscored the camaraderie and national pride surrounding Italy's hosting of the Games, with Goggia's cauldron lighting symbolizing the culmination of years of effort and dedication from athletes and organizers alike.
