Novak Djokovic overcame a determined Roman Safiullin in a five-set thriller at Wimbledon, winning 6-3, 6-7, 7-6, 3-6, 6-3 in a match that lasted four hours and 12 minutes on Centre Court. The victory secured Djokovic a spot in the quarter-finals, where he will face Jannik Sinner.
Djokovic's Strong Start Falters
The seven-time Wimbledon champion began the match in dominant fashion, breaking Safiullin's serve early in the first set and taking it 6-3. However, the Russian qualifier, ranked 92nd in the world, refused to back down. Safiullin raised his level in the second set, pushing Djokovic to a tie-break, which he won 7-5 to level the match.
Djokovic regained control in the third set, edging another tie-break 7-4, but his consistency wavered in the fourth. Safiullin broke Djokovic's serve twice to take the set 6-3, forcing a decider.
Deciding Set Drama
In the fifth set, Djokovic's experience proved decisive. He broke Safiullin's serve at 3-2 and held his own serve to close out the match. According to tournament statistics, Djokovic won 78% of his first-serve points in the final set, compared to 62% for Safiullin. The Serbian also hit 15 aces overall, while Safiullin managed 11.
Djokovic's Reaction
After the match, Djokovic acknowledged the challenge. “Roman played incredibly well,” he said. “I had to dig deep and find another gear. The crowd was amazing, and that helped me push through.” The victory extended Djokovic's winning streak at Wimbledon to 28 matches, dating back to 2018.
Looking Ahead
Djokovic will now face world No. 1 Jannik Sinner in the quarter-finals. Sinner advanced after defeating Alexander Zverev in straight sets. Djokovic leads their head-to-head 4-2, but Sinner won their most recent meeting at the 2024 Australian Open. The match is scheduled for Wednesday on Centre Court.
