Trump Proposes Khabib Showdown for Jake Paul
In a surprising exchange that has captured the attention of combat sports fans, former US President Donald Trump has suggested that influencer boxer Jake Paul should face one of the most dominant fighters in mixed martial arts history. During a sit-down interview this week, Trump responded to Paul's question about potential opponents by naming retired UFC champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.
Paul's Recent Fighting History
Jake Paul, who last fought in December 2023, suffered a knockout loss to former two-time heavyweight boxing champion Anthony Joshua. The sixth-round defeat marked Paul's second professional loss in a career that currently stands at 12 wins and 2 losses. The bout against Joshua resulted in Paul sustaining a broken jaw, though he has previously recorded notable victories over several MMA stars including Nate Diaz, Anderson Silva, and Tyron Woodley.
Despite this setback, Paul is actively planning his return to combat sports, potentially making his debut in the MMA cage. During his conversation with Trump, the 29-year-old mentioned several potential opponents including former UFC champion Francis Ngannou, boxing champion Oleksandr Usyk, and previous conqueror Tommy Fury.
Trump's Fighting Knowledge
Donald Trump, who turns 80 in June, demonstrated his familiarity with combat sports during the exchange. When Paul asked "Who would you wanna see me fight?" Trump initially hesitated before responding: "Well, I... I... Probably Khabib, how about Khabib?" referring to the legendary Russian fighter who retired undefeated in 2020.
"You're down? I think he's just great," Trump continued after Paul expressed willingness. "When they say, 'Who was the best?' of those... I mean, I've had a lot of fights; I've had Mike Tyson, that was great."
Khabib's Legacy and Current Role
Khabib Nurmagomedov retired from professional competition in 2020 with a perfect 29-0 record, having successfully defended the UFC lightweight championship three times. His victories included submissions of Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Justin Gaethje. The Russian fighter retired shortly after his father and head coach Abdulmanap passed away from COVID-related complications.
Since retirement, Nurmagomedov has transitioned to coaching, most notably guiding his childhood friend Islam Makhachev to championship success in both lightweight and welterweight divisions. At 37 years old, Nurmagomedov remains heavily involved in the sport despite no longer competing professionally.
Trump's UFC Connections
The former president's suggestion comes amid his close relationship with UFC president Dana White. Trump has attended numerous UFC events in recent years and will be honored with a special fight card at the White House on June 14th to celebrate his 80th birthday and 250 years of American history.
This unprecedented event will feature 85,000 free tickets distributed to fans for access to a park near the White House. The card will be co-headlined by interim lightweight champion Justin Gaethje and regular champion Ilia Topuria, who was reportedly in talks to face Nurmagomedov's protégé Makhachev.
While a fight between Jake Paul and Khabib Nurmagomedov remains highly unlikely given the latter's retirement and different weight classes, the exchange highlights the ongoing crossover between politics, entertainment, and combat sports. Paul continues to promote fights through his Most Valuable Promotions company, including an upcoming Netflix event featuring Francis Ngannou versus Philipe Lins and Ronda Rousey versus Gina Carano.
