McLaren team principal Andrea Stella has identified Ferrari and Mercedes as the early frontrunners for the 2026 Formula 1 season, despite his team winning the last two constructors' championships. Speaking after pre-season testing in Bahrain, Stella said the two rivals appear 'a step ahead' of McLaren and Red Bull.
Pre-season testing concluded last Friday in Bahrain, with Ferrari impressing through rapid race starts and a unique rear-wing design. Mercedes, whose engines McLaren will use again this season, showed strong pace with drivers George Russell and Kimi Antonelli, validating their status as early favourites.
Stella cautioned against reading too much into testing times, noting that track conditions varied significantly. 'McLaren and Red Bull are probably very similar. Ferrari and Mercedes are a step ahead,' he said, while adding that race simulations often provide a more accurate picture of genuine performance.
The season opener in Australia on 8 March will present different challenges to Bahrain, particularly regarding power unit management. Stella explained that the Albert Park circuit requires more careful energy harvesting and deployment, making drivers busier in managing their driving style.
Lando Norris, who won last year's Australian Grand Prix and enters the season with the number 1 on his car after his maiden drivers' title, will lead McLaren's charge. The team remains confident despite Stella's assessment of the competitive order.
