Roberto De Zerbi has confirmed that Savio missed Tottenham Hotspur's fixture against Newcastle United due to muscle fatigue, describing the setback as "bad news" ahead of the match.
The 22-year-old Brazilian winger was ruled out of the squad in north London, with the Italian manager revealing the decision was made after the player reported discomfort during training.
De Zerbi explains Savio absence
Speaking about the situation, De Zerbi said: "It was bad news yesterday before training in the afternoon because he suffered muscle fatigue and the medical staff obviously didn't want to take a risk and I agree with them - it's not the right moment, especially because he didn't work in the last 10 days, for him 20 minutes against Charlton, maybe it was tough to rest for the days after but for the next game I think there are no problems."
The manager had previously indicated that Savio would be in contention for a comeback against Nottingham Forest last weekend, but the winger was among several notable absentees from the squad for the Newcastle match.
Other absentees and transfer speculation
Kevin Danso, Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr also failed to feature in the fixture. Danso has been the subject of transfer speculation regarding a potential move to Sunderland after the Black Cats submitted a loan bid, while Sarr has faced considerable doubt over his future at the club.
Despite the concerns, De Zerbi expressed confidence that Savio would have no problems for the next game, suggesting the winger could return to action shortly.
