Raducanu Withdraws from Wimbledon, Earns £40,000

Emma Raducanu has withdrawn from Wimbledon just 15 hours before her scheduled first-round match, citing a stress fracture. Despite not playing, she will receive £40,000 in prize money, half of the first-round loser's payout of £80,000, under Wimbledon's rules.

Withdrawal Announcement

The British No.1 was set to face Croatia's Antonia Ruzic in the first match on Court 1 at 1pm on Monday. However, scans on Sunday evening confirmed a stress fracture, forcing her to pull out. Raducanu had previously vowed to do everything possible to compete.

Raducanu's Statement

In an emotional Instagram post, Raducanu said: "Hi everyone. I can't believe I'm saying this, but sadly I've had to withdraw from this year's Wimbledon. I've done everything possible to try to get to the start line tomorrow but after a final scan tonight, the niggle I've been managing has developed into a stress fracture and I've been medically advised to stop pushing through. Playing at Wimbledon, in front of a home crowd, means everything to me, so this is really difficult to process. I want to thank you all for your support and encouragement. Especially at a time like this, it is invaluable. I look forward to seeing you when I'm back."

Prize Money Rules

According to Wimbledon regulations, players who withdraw before their first match are entitled to 50% of the first-round prize money. As a result, Raducanu will earn £40,000 despite her withdrawal and the impending layoff. The 2019 US Open champion's injury is a significant blow to the tournament and her fans.
