Liverpool teenager Josh Abe has undergone surgery to repair a persistent shoulder problem. The 16-year-old winger, who featured for the first team during pre-season, dislocated his shoulder earlier this month while playing for the under-18s against Manchester City.
Abe was seen at the AXA Training Centre last week with his right arm in a sling as a precaution. He has now confirmed on social media that he has had an operation, posting a photograph of himself in hospital with the caption: "Surgery. Minor setback."
Coach's assessment
Speaking last Friday, U21s head coach Rob Page said: "He dislocated his shoulder. It popped out and popped back in again. Apparently, he has had this problem for a while, so it's nothing major."
"It's just something that he is having to go through."
Rising star's journey
Highly-rated Abe, who has been at Liverpool since the age of four, was pursued by a number of European heavyweights before committing his long-term future to the club in June. He was subsequently part of the United States tour with Andoni Iraola's senior side, appearing in friendlies against Sunderland and Wrexham.
He later scored on his first U21s appearance in a friendly against Huddersfield Town.
