Indianapolis Colts backup quarterback Anthony Richardson suffered an orbital fracture during a bizarre warm-up accident before Sunday's game against the Arizona Cardinals. The incident occurred when a pole attached to an elastic exercise band snapped and struck Richardson in the face.
According to ESPN, the 23-year-old was taken to hospital following the mishap. The Colts have not released further details, but a source indicated that Richardson is expected to miss several weeks due to swelling that has temporarily affected his vision. Fortunately, his eye is believed to have escaped permanent damage.
Richardson, selected fourth overall in the 2023 NFL Draft, has struggled with injuries and inconsistency. Daniel Jones has taken over as the Colts' starter this season, leading the team to a 5-1 record. The Colts also lost cornerback Charvarius Ward to a concussion after a collision with a teammate during warm-ups.
Head coach Shane Steichen commented on the unusual events: 'That was very interesting to say the least. We had to rally the troops in the locker room and get us back into focus. I thought our guys did that the right way. Just obviously hope AR is good and Ward is good.'
