Cole Palmer sends message to Thomas Tuchel and breaks silence on England World Cup snub
Cole Palmer breaks silence on England World Cup omission

Chelsea forward Cole Palmer has spoken publicly for the first time about his omission from England's World Cup squad, expressing his disappointment and belief that he could have made a difference for the Three Lions.

Palmer's World Cup heartbreak

The 24-year-old, who starred at the European Championships two years ago and scored in the final against Spain, was left out of Thomas Tuchel's 26-man squad for the tournament in the United States. Despite featuring prominently during the qualifying campaign and starting England's last friendly against Japan before the squad was announced, a disappointing season at club level ultimately cost him his place.

In an interview with The Times, Palmer admitted: "I'm watching it where I can. I'm enjoying my holidays and doing different things, but when I'm chilling then, yeah, if a game is on I'll watch it. Well, of course I do (wish I was part of the squad). Every player that plays football wants to be at the World Cup, but it's a decision that I cannot change and a hard one, for whatever reason. But I'm just trying to enjoy the summer off — the first summer I've ever had off."

What Palmer could have offered

England have progressed to the last 16 despite a lack of creativity and spark in the final third. Tuchel's right-flank options, Bukayo Saka and Noni Madueke, have struggled to make an impact, while Morgan Rogers has been used sparingly as Jude Bellingham's understudy. Palmer, who overcame fitness issues towards the end of last season, believes he could have eased the burden on star duo Harry Kane and Bellingham.

"I know what I could have offered, you know — something different to what the manager has picked," Palmer said. "But like I said before, I can't change the decision and I wish everyone all the best."

Pundits question Tuchel's decision

Jamie Carragher has joined a growing list of pundits who suggested Tuchel made a costly error by not taking a gamble on Palmer. Asked if he agreed with those sentiments, Palmer replied: "Yeah, of course it's nice, but I'm not there."

England's reliance on moments of attacking brilliance from Kane and Bellingham has highlighted the absence of a player like Palmer, who could have provided additional creativity. The Three Lions are now preparing for a last-16 clash against Mexico at the Azteca Stadium.
