Michael Carrick explains Benjamin Sesko injury after Liverpool win
Carrick reveals Sesko injury after Liverpool match

Michael Carrick has revealed why Benjamin Sesko was subbed off during Manchester United's thrilling 3-2 win against Liverpool. Sesko, 22, was replaced by Amad at half-time of Sunday's Premier League clash.

Sesko's controversial goal

The striker had put United 2-0 up with a controversial goal, as the ball appeared to brush his fingertips on the way in. The law states that any touch of the hand or arm from the scorer should result in their goal being disallowed. However, VAR deemed that there was no conclusive evidence to overturn Sesko's 11th goal of the season and second in as many games.

Injury update

The Slovenian was unable to add to his tally after the break, though, and Carrick has explained that it was a collision with the advertising boards which prompted his substitution. "He got a bang on his shin when he fell down the side of the pitch," the Red Devils boss told MUTV. "It's something that he's been carrying for a little bit as well, so we've had to manage him a bit but he's certainly had a bang right on the same spot. It's as simple as that really."

Carrick also said to Sky Sports post-match: "He's been carrying a bit of a shin problem for some time and it was when we got pushed into the hoarding and down the dip. So that was it."

Recovery and upcoming fixtures

Sesko will hope to recover in time for Saturday's visit to Sunderland, having scored in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford earlier this season. United's £74 million signing might not be risked, however, as they have already secured Champions League qualification. The victory over Liverpool means that no team from outside the top five can catch United, who threw away their two-goal lead before Kobbie Mainoo's emphatic late winner in front of the Stretford End.

"There has been a lot of good work to put us in a position with three games to go and get that sealed," Carrick added. "But it's not something we've spoke about as a group really. I think it's not something we over-celebrate. I think it's a step. We want more. We want to be finishing higher up the league but, certainly there is huge credit deserved that goes to the players and the staff, for putting us in this position, at this stage."
