Bruno Guimaraes wears the No. 39 shirt at Arsenal as a tribute to taxi 039, which his father drove day and night in Rio de Janeiro to fund his youth football career.
The Brazil international joined the Gunners from Newcastle United in early August for £75 million, signing a long-term contract to become a key figure in Mikel Arteta's midfield.
An unconventional number
Fans quickly noticed that Guimaraes opted to stick with squad number 39 rather than taking a traditional starting midfielder number in north London. Many supporters have questioned why such an unconventional number holds so much significance for him.
The 28-year-old previously wore No. 39 during his time with Athletico Paranaense, Lyon and Newcastle.
Arsenal debut
Guimaraes has already made his official debut for Arsenal in the number, featuring in their 3–0 Community Shield victory over Manchester City. He started the match and put in an active 45-minute display before being substituted at half-time as planned.
The reigning champions will kickstart the new Premier League campaign by hosting Coventry City at the Emirates on Friday evening.
