A record 1,338,544 individuals have submitted applications for the 2027 London Marathon public ballot, exceeding the previous record set last year. Among these, over one million applications originated from within the United Kingdom, establishing a new benchmark for domestic interest in the event.
Record-Breaking 2026 Edition
The 2026 London Marathon witnessed a historic 59,830 finishers crossing the finish line, while raising more than £87.5 million for charitable causes. This achievement solidified its status as the world's largest annual one-day fundraising event.
Event Expansion Under Consideration
Hugh Brasher, chief executive of London Marathon Events, described the marathon as the "world’s most sought-after marathon" and emphasised the organisation's commitment to encouraging physical activity. Discussions are currently underway regarding a potential expansion of the 2027 event to two days, incorporating a Saturday race to accommodate a significantly larger number of participants. A final decision is anticipated by the end of May.
