Mochrie: Don't let cup exit derail league form

Chris Mochrie has urged St Mirren to ensure their heavy Premier Sports Cup defeat to Rangers does not derail their impressive start to the Premiership season.

The Buddies have won their first two league games but were eliminated from the cup at Ibrox on Sunday, losing 5-1 to Derek McInnes' side. Mochrie scored St Mirren's goal with a fine strike, but Craig McLeish's men were second best and could not cope with the home side's attacking threat.

Mochrie's rallying call

Mochrie insists the team must recover quickly and maintain their league form. He said: "The biggest thing is that we don’t let it damage our belief in what the manager is trying to do. We’ve started the season well with a couple of wins in the league. We need to pick ourselves up from Sunday and learn from where we went wrong. We want to become better after it."

The midfielder acknowledged the quality of the opposition, adding: "Rangers have a lot of quality so we knew it would be a tough game. They were clinical and took their chances. Ultimately, we fell short."

Pain of losing the trophy

Mochrie, a former Airdrie player, admitted the defeat was particularly painful given St Mirren were the holders of the trophy, having won it in December. He said: "It was a tough one to take for us. We were holders of the trophy and didn’t want to give it up easy. To go out in that fashion was disappointing."

He reflected on the performance: "We were good in spells but a little bit open to counter attacks. Ultimately, that killed us. It has to hurt because it’s a big loss but we have to try and stick together."
