Matthias Jaissle has hinted he will give young players more opportunities at Newcastle United, after being impressed by a clutch of youngsters in the 2-1 win over Valencia. Despite the game being in a precarious position at the Mestalla, Jaissle handed Dylan Charlton and debutant Henry Johnson a chance while the Magpies guarded a slender lead, and Mason Miley was sent on at half-time when 1-0 down.
Youth on Standby for Everton
Miley, Johnson and Charlton could be set for more minutes at Murrayfield on Tuesday night as the Magpies have issues in defence. Their options were further reduced after Alex Murphy's departure on a season-long loan to Kaiserslautern. Sean Neave, Leo Shahar and Rory Finneran have also had a chance to impress in pre-season, and Jaissle will continue to assess the youngsters before deciding who else goes out on loan this season.
Jaissle said: "The young guys did a good job from the Academy. We saw many of them in Valencia so that is also good to see. The Academy is producing good talent."
Auditions Ahead of Liverpool Opener
Jaissle also made it clear there will be further auditions for the young guns in the coming days, starting with Everton at Murrayfield tomorrow night. He insists that every player - young or senior - will have a chance to impress before the season-opener against Liverpool at St James' Park on Sunday, August 23.
Jaissle said: "Liverpool is too far ahead to think about, if you are asking about the starting XI vs Liverpool. We still have three more friendly matches. We can see many things. I just want to give everybody a chance to show up. With time, they can. That is the key. It is a difficult time for young players, and it is never going to be easy in football, especially at the highest level."
Transfer Window Impact
The chances of the young guns getting their opportunity this term will also be impacted by any further business before the close of the transfer window. Newcastle are trying to sign at least an experienced midfielder and a right-back, but suffered a setback in their pursuit of Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.
Jaissle said: "Every day you get new information and updates from the transfer market. But with all respect, it (a Press conference) is not the right place to talk about it."
