Newcastle United head coach Matthias Jaissle has said there is 'nothing more to add' when it comes to Nick Pope's future and whether he will remain at the club beyond Tuesday's transfer deadline.
Pope has been Newcastle's number one goalkeeper in each of his four seasons at the club since joining from Burnley in the summer of 2022 but has fallen out of favour under Jaissle. The England international has not only lost his No 1 spot to new signing Lukas Hornicek but Ewen Jaouen will be the club's second choice goalkeeper, leaving Pope's future at the club in limbo.
Jaissle's earlier comments on Pope
Jaissle said earlier this month after a friendly win in Valencia that he had a conversation with Pope about his future, intimating that it had been decided it would be best for all parties to move on this summer.
"I had a talk with Nick," Jaissle said in a press conference at the Mestalla Stadium. "I really appreciate what he did in his career so far, and he knows exactly his situation right now. We need to deal with it in the best possible way. But I always appreciate the players and the human beings behind them, so this is the most important thing."
Time running out for a move
With just five days until the transfer window slams shut on Tuesday, September 1, time is running out for Pope to find a new club. There has been tentative interest from Celtic, Hull City and Ipswich Town but nothing has materialised into anything serious and the prospect he remains at St James' Park, at least until the January transfer window, is looking more and more likely.
Aidan Harris and Mark Gillespie have been playing third and fourth choice in the goalkeeping unit across the last few games and when asked if there was an update on Pope's future, or whether he could have a role as a third choice goalkeeper this season, Jaissle was giving very little away.
Jaissle's latest response
"Yeah, it is a bit the same like I said about Nick Woltemade," Jaissle told Chronicle Live. "He is a player from Newcastle United and here in the press conference there is nothing more to add."
