The Dragons are considering a move to re-sign Wales fly-half Sam Davies for the 2027/28 season. The 32-year-old is currently playing his rugby in France, aiming to help Grenoble finally reach the Top 14.
WalesOnline understands the Men of Gwent have shown interest in bringing Davies back to Rodney Parade. Davies previously played for the Dragons between 2019 and 2023, having moved to Newport after seven years with the Ospreys.
Career in France
The eight-cap Wales fly-half has spent the last three years in France, putting Grenoble on the brink of promotion from Pro D2 in each of his first two seasons there. He won the league's player of the season in his first year.
Last season proved testing, with Davies featuring just twice after a staph infection wiped out much of the campaign. The bacterial infection reached his bone and left him unable to walk for days. The former IRB Junior Player of the Year will now look to bounce back in his fourth year in France.
Dragons' interest
The Dragons will be watching his progress keenly, having already considered him as a signing for the 2027/28 campaign. Tinus de Beer is currently the club's first-choice fly-half, with Angus O'Brien, Cai Evans and Jac Lloyd all on the books.
Filo Tiatia's side had looked at bringing Wales playmaker Jarrod Evans to Rodney Parade ahead of the upcoming season, but he ultimately chose to return to former club Cardiff.
Contract situation
Davies signed an extension with his current club last year, despite interest from Leicester Tigers and Scarlets. That extension will keep him in France until the summer of 2028, but it's feasible he could be released from his contract early if he were keen on returning to Wales.
A move back home could put him into the picture for a Test recall ahead of next year's World Cup in Australia. Davies, who made his Test debut in the autumn of 2016, has not been capped since the 2017 summer tour.
