Rory McIlroy has filed for divorce from his wife, Erica Stoll, after seven years of marriage, court documents have revealed. The Northern Irish golfer, 35, submitted the petition in Palm Beach County State Court in Florida on Monday, May 13, 2024, just a day after winning the Wells Fargo Championship.
The couple began dating in 2014 and married in Ireland on April 21, 2017. They share a three-year-old daughter, Poppy Kennedy McIlroy. A statement from McIlroy's team said: 'Rory McIlroy's communications team confirmed today that a divorce has been filed. They stressed Rory's desire to ensure this difficult time is as respectful and amicable as possible. He will not be making any further comment.'
The court filing describes the marriage as 'irretrievably broken'. Both parties have agreed to a prenuptial agreement signed on March 17, 2017, and the filing requests that the court determine the agreement is valid and enforceable. The details of the prenup have not been disclosed for privacy reasons.
The filing also seeks a co-parenting arrangement for their daughter, requesting shared custody and a timesharing schedule. It states that both parents have the ability to provide support and that child support should be established in accordance with Florida guidelines, including health insurance for Poppy.
The divorce filing comes just two days before the PGA Championship at Valhalla, Kentucky, where McIlroy is among the favourites following his recent win. Despite the personal turmoil, McIlroy remains focused on golf, saying after his Wells Fargo victory: 'I really got some confidence... I am going into the next major of the year feeling really good about myself.'
