World number one Scottie Scheffler fired a sensational second-round 64 to take the outright lead at The Open 2025 on 10 under par. The American’s round featured eight birdies and one bogey, giving him a halfway total of 132.
Scheffler leads by one stroke from Englishman Matt Fitzpatrick and defending champion Brian Harman, who are both on nine under. Fitzpatrick, who shot 67, said: “There’s still a hell of a long way to go. The aim is to stay in it for as long as possible and hopefully pull away at the death.”
Shane Lowry, the 2019 champion, received a two-shot penalty after his round for his club touching and moving his ball. The R&A are investigating the incident. Lowry is tied for fifth on five under alongside Tyrrell Hatton, Robert MacIntyre and others.
Rory McIlroy is three under after a round of 70, while Jon Rahm struggled to level par after a bogey at the last. Cameron Smith, the 2022 champion, missed the cut after rounds of 72 and 78, completing a grand slam of missed cuts in majors this year.
Scheffler’s record with a solo halfway lead is three wins from six attempts, including his first Masters triumph in 2022. Sky Sports pundit Wayne Riley predicted Scheffler could reach 20 under if the wind remains light.
