Lisandro Martinez reiterated his criticism of Manchester United following the club's 2-0 defeat to Atletico Madrid in the Champions League, this time in an interview with CBS Sports that was not shown in the UK.
The 28-year-old defender had already launched a stinging attack on the club's director of football, Jason Wilcox, during an Amazon Prime Video interview, criticising the lack of signings during the summer transfer window. Wayne Rooney branded his behaviour as disrespectful and out of order, accusing the Argentina international of having an agenda.
Martinez's CBS interview
In the CBS Sports interview with Peter Schmeichel, Martinez said: "We're not playing well as a team. You can see the disconnection; we can't [string] three or four passes together, and the body language [is bad]. We missed some chances; we are negative, and yeah, when you play against these teams, especially in the Champions League, you can't miss opportunities, and you can't concede the goal we conceded in the first minutes."
Following the criticism of his team-mates, Martinez continued: "Trying to be positive and trying to be honest, we have to change and do more. Because we are capable of doing better; we have the players. But also, when you watch television and watch the games, you see the players and the managers, and you [point] the finger [and blame them], which is right. We take the responsibility, but also, as a club, I expect more. I'm not gonna close my mouth. I expect more."
Demands for ambition
He added: "We need more ambition. We need to talk more about winning the Champions League, talk more about winning the Premier League instead of other things."
Martinez then rounded off the interview by stating: "Every season, we're talking about the same thing. Of course, but if we don't say the truth, nothing will change."
Previous Amazon interview
Previously speaking to Amazon, he said: "I have to control myself a lot. But sometimes it's a reflection of how our club is at the moment, you know? We [had] a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top, from above, you know, to bring more players to compete, because many, many teams bring many players in as well, and today also, Atletico have an amazing team, and they deserved to win today."
Martinez reiterated: "I expected more, honestly. I expected more," before adding: "I expected more from our technical director. I have to be honest, you know?"
