Two amateur women golfers have defied odds of 17 million to one by hitting consecutive holes-in-one at their local club. Jayne Mattey, 57, and Clair Shine, 77, achieved the remarkable feat on the 13th hole at East Berkshire Golf Club in Crowthorne.
The pair were playing in a friendly four-ball match when they teed off on the 203-yard par-three hole. Due to temporary greens, they were playing from a forward tee, avoiding a deep ditch that normally makes the hole 'hellish'. Mrs Mattey, a career coach with a handicap of 36, used a pitching wedge for her shot. 'I was just thankful I hit it straight,' she said. 'We heard the rattle as it hit the pin, but we just assumed it had bounced back.'
Next up was Mrs Shine, a retired bookkeeper with a handicap of 31, who also used a pitching wedge. It was only when they walked onto the green that they realised both balls were in the hole. 'We did high fives and probably a little dance,' said Mrs Shine, a grandmother of six who had previously scored a hole-in-one 12 years ago.
Mrs Mattey, who only joined the club in April after a 20-year break from golf, said the feat had brought them closer together. 'We are playing again next week now, she might be my lucky charm,' she added. The club presented the pair with a bottle of champagne to celebrate their achievement.
