England's Matt Fitzpatrick defeated world number one Scottie Scheffler in a playoff to win the RBC Heritage for the second time. The victory came after a dramatic final round at Hilton Head, where Fitzpatrick held a three-shot lead going into the 15th tee but saw it evaporate as Scheffler birdied the 15th and 16th holes.
Fitzpatrick's bogey on the 18th after a poor chip sent the match into a playoff, where he appeared the underdog. However, he produced a stunning four-iron approach shot to 12 feet and sank the birdie putt for the win, after Scheffler missed the green with his second and chipped to eight feet.
Reflecting on the victory, Fitzpatrick said: 'It was a lot of grit. I knew Scottie was going to make some birdies down the stretch and I kind of had to hang in there a little bit.' He added that the tournament was close to his heart, having holidayed at Hilton Head with his family as a child.
The win marks Fitzpatrick's fourth PGA Tour title and his second in 28 days, following his victory at the Valspar Championship last month. He compared his experience to Rory McIlroy's dramatic Masters win the previous week, joking with his caddie about McIlroy's caddie Harry Diamond.
Fitzpatrick said of his winning shot: 'To hit the four-iron there was out of this world. This was a tournament I wanted to win growing up before any of the majors... To win it twice means the world. To go toe-to-toe with Scottie and win it on the 73rd hole is special.'
