Cole Palmer sends message to Tuchel over World Cup snub

Chelsea star Cole Palmer has broken his silence on being omitted from England's World Cup squad, insisting he could have provided a unique attacking option for Thomas Tuchel's side. The 24-year-old playmaker was a surprise absentee from the 26-man squad for the tournament in Mexico, despite scoring 11 goals in all competitions for Chelsea last season.

Palmer's Reaction to Omission

Speaking to The Times, Palmer expressed his disappointment but accepted the decision. "Well, of course I do," he said when asked if he believed he should have been included. "Every player that plays football wants to be at the World Cup, but it's a decision that I cannot change and a hard one, for whatever reason. But I'm just trying to enjoy the summer off — the first summer I've ever had off."

Fans and pundits have questioned Palmer's exclusion, particularly after England struggled to break down opponents like Ghana, Panama, and DR Congo in the group stage. Palmer acknowledged the support but remained pragmatic. "Yeah, of course it's nice [fans suggesting Palmer should have been included], but I'm not there. I know what I could have offered, you know — something different to what the manager has picked. But like I said before, I can't change the decision and I wish everyone all the best."

Proving People Wrong

Palmer admitted the snub has fueled his motivation. "Naturally. It's like anything: if you're told you're, essentially, not good enough then you're going to want to prove people wrong. So yeah, I guess so." The 24-year-old has made 14 appearances for England, scoring twice, including a crucial strike in the Euro 2024 final against Spain.

This is not the first time Palmer has addressed his World Cup omission. Last month, he told reporters: "This season hasn't been the best, but it is what it is. I'm not crying over a decision you can't change, and I hope the lads make it all the way." He added that he stays grounded by talking to friends outside football. "I don't get too down. I just talk to my friends outside of football. They're normal people, so it helps me feel normal, feel grounded."

England's World Cup Campaign

England face co-hosts Mexico at the Azteca Stadium on Monday in a Round of 16 clash. Tuchel's side are aiming to reach the quarter-finals for the third consecutive World Cup. If they beat Mexico, they will face either Brazil or Norway in the last eight. Palmer's absence continues to be a talking point as England seek to progress without one of the Premier League's most creative talents.
