Chermiti backed to recover from ACL and succeed Ronaldo
Chermiti backed to recover from ACL and succeed Ronaldo

Goncalo Feio believes Youssef Chermiti can overcome his ACL injury and eventually become Cristiano Ronaldo's long-term successor for Portugal. The Rangers striker was injured in last weekend's defeat to Hibs, ruling him out for a significant period.

Setback and Recovery

The former Legia Warsaw boss acknowledged the injury is a huge blow but is confident Chermiti will return stronger. Chermiti is considered one of Portugal's top prospects and a future replacement for Ronaldo in the national team's striking role.

Feio told Record Sport: “Chermiti is out for the rest of the season with a confirmed ACL rupture. This is a huge setback in terms of his career momentum. He just needs to concentrate on getting fit and getting back to the levels he showed in some of the big games last season, like the matches against Celtic and Hearts.”

National Team Prospects

Feio recalled Chermiti's development last season, noting he was called up for Portugal under-21s but initially lacked playing time at Rangers. He then found form and started scoring goals, looking impressive.

Feio said: “I think we are all hoping he can get himself fit and back to that level again or even higher.” He noted that AC Milan's new signing Goncalo Ramos is seen as the immediate successor to Ronaldo, but Chermiti could have a chance if he returns to form.

Future Value

Rangers turned down a £20 million offer for Chermiti from Galatasaray days before his injury. Feio, who was interviewed for the Motherwell job, believes Chermiti's value could increase if he fulfils his potential.

Feio added: “I know Rangers turned down a big offer for Chermiti. It is a big decision from the club. I know he has been unlucky with the injury but if he can get back to his best and increase his potential, that should increase the potential for even more profit later on. He is a very interesting player with a great striking profile that the top clubs are looking for.”
