Julia Zigiotti Olme’s sixth-minute lob proved enough to earn Manchester United coach Eva Olid a second Women’s Super League victory of the season with a 1-0 home win over Liverpool at the Unity Stadium.
Decisive early strike
Zigiotti Olme capitalised on a mistake by Liverpool goalkeeper Khiara Keating, and despite some late pressure by Gareth Taylor’s side, United held on to make it back-to-back league wins.
After a shaky start under the new head coach, the Spaniard has now masterminded four consecutive victories in all competitions, with United unbeaten in five matches.
Milestone match
This was United’s 250th match since the team reformed in 2018, and Olid watched her side mark the occasion with the breakthrough after six minutes.
It was a moment to forget for England goalkeeper Keating after her pass out from the back was intercepted by Zigiotti Olme, who composed herself and chipped home in superb fashion.
Liverpool pressure and United resistance
Liverpool pushed for a leveller and drew a double save from United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce midway through the first half. Cornelia Kapocs had a low effort saved by Tullis-Joyce, who got up quickly to deny Beata Olsson on the rebound as well.
United’s Jess Park hit the crossbar before half-time with a left-footed strike from the edge of the box before Keating saved at her near post from Andrea Medina on the rebound. Liverpool’s best chance of an equaliser came 20 minutes from time when Jenna Clark found herself free at a corner but she could not direct her header on target.
League standings impact
The win moves United level with Liverpool in the WSL, with both teams three points off the European places.
