Elyaz Zidane, the youngest son of French football legend Zinedine Zidane, has reportedly chosen to represent Algeria at international level, according to sources close to the player. The 18-year-old, who plays for Real Madrid's youth academy, had been eligible for France, Spain, and Algeria.
Elyaz, whose full name is Elyaz Zidane Fernández, holds dual French and Spanish nationality but qualifies for Algeria through his grandparents. He has been called up to Algeria's under-20 squad for an upcoming training camp, indicating his decision to play for the African nation.
His father, Zinedine Zidane, who famously led France to World Cup glory in 1998, has previously stated he would support whatever choice his son made. Elyaz is the fourth of Zidane's four sons, all of whom have been involved in Real Madrid's youth system.
The decision marks a departure from the path of his older brother Enzo, who chose to represent France at youth level. Elyaz's choice highlights the growing trend of dual-nationality players opting for their ancestral countries.
