A 25-year-old footballer has died after collapsing on the pitch while making his debut for Senegalese second-tier side AS Saloum. Youssou Diouf had entered the match as a substitute in the 80th minute and fell ill moments after the final whistle.
Despite urgent medical attention at the Maniang Soumare Stadium in Thies and evacuation to a regional hospital, he was pronounced dead. The Senegalese Professional Football League (LSFP) confirmed the incident occurred on Sunday, February 22, 2026, during a Ligue 2 fixture against Amitie FC.
Former Premier League striker Demba Ba, who played for Chelsea and Newcastle, paid tribute, writing: 'All our condolences to the family of Youssouf Diouf and to the AS Saloum club following the passing of our young brother.' Social media users also expressed their sorrow.
The LSFP stated it remains in contact with authorities and the club to provide support. An investigation into the cause of death is expected.
