Wrexham troll Southampton again after Spygate jibe and 2-1 win

Wrexham have trolled Southampton for the second time in three days after beating their Championship rivals 2-1. An 89th-minute own goal from Keven Schlotterbeck gave Wrexham all three points at the Racecourse Ground, ending a run of three games without a win for Phil Parkinson's men.

It also marked a huge turnaround from five months ago when Southampton rocked up in Wales and won 5-1. Weeks later, it emerged that Southampton had been spying on their opponents' training sessions, admitting to getting intel on Middlesbrough, Ipswich Town and Oxford United - behaviour which saw them kicked out of the Championship play-off final.

Video pokes fun at Spygate

On Thursday, Wrexham published a video of their co-owners, Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac, poking fun at Spygate. Promoting shirt sponsor Firefox, Reynolds, who had emerged from behind a tree, began: "Today, for no particular reason, we want to talk about the importance of privacy." Mac added: "Specifically, how to prevent spies from seeing what you're doing."

Reynolds went on to joke about searching online for 'how to run a football club' before the pair emphasised the important to privacy is 'to people everywhere'. Wrapping up the video, Reynolds said: "Refreshing, huh? An organisation that actually respects your privacy."

The clip ended with both co-owners looking at a smartphone screen, allegedly showing the Southampton pickleball team practicing. Now Wrexham have taken another swipe after their victory.

Club posts timeline on X

The club posted on X: "April 7 2026: Wrexham AFC 1-5 Southampton. May 7 2026: Southampton get caught spying on Middlesbrough. September 19 2026: Wrexham AFC 2-1 Southampton." "Makes you think...," they added alongside a picture of Southampton legend Matt Le Tissier.

The post accumulated more than 2,600 likes within an hour of it being posted. One user replied: "Admin needs to be arrested for murder. Ouch!" Another said: "Unreal s***housery." But one Wrexham fan took a different view. "Guys stop it now, the video was funny but don't do this s***!"

During Saturday's game, home fans chanted: "You only win when you're spying."

Parkinson reflects on result

For Parkinson, it was all about the result after a tricky period. "I think we all needed a lift today with a gritty Wrexham performance," he noted.

Wrexham are now level on points with Southampton (10) after eight league games going into the international break.
