Wrexham have confirmed that chief executive Michael Williamson has left the club after two years, with co-owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney issuing a joint statement on the decision. Williamson has departed with immediate effect, and club director Shaun Harvey has taken over as acting CEO.
Statement from the co-owners
Reynolds and McElhenney released a joint statement on behalf of the board on Friday afternoon, thanking Williamson for his contribution to the club's progress. "We thank Michael Williamson for his two years at Wrexham and for his work taking the club from League 1 to the Championship," the statement read.
"Since our takeover five years ago, Wrexham have had historic success on the pitch and won hearts all over the globe. We remain focused on our most important task: to make the Wrexham community proud."
Shaun Harvey steps in
The statement also praised Harvey, who has been involved with Wrexham since the early days of Reynolds and McElhenney's ownership. "Shaun Harvey has been an integral part of this journey from the beginning, and we know Shaun will give every support to Phil Parkinson and the lads on the pitch while keeping the broader Wrexham community roaring us on," it added.
No reason has been given for Williamson's departure, and the club, currently 16th in the Championship, have not indicated how long Harvey will remain in the position on an interim basis.
Williamson's tenure at Wrexham
Williamson was appointed in May 2024, replacing Fleur Robinson, as Wrexham prepared for their first season in League One following back-to-back promotions. He arrived with considerable experience in football administration, having previously held senior positions at Inter Milan, DC United and Miami FC.
During his time at the club, Wrexham secured promotion from League One into the Championship, completing three successive promotions under manager Phil Parkinson. His appointment was seen as an important step in the club's expansion under its Hollywood owners, as Wrexham sought to develop commercial operations and its international profile.
Harvey's background
Harvey, the former English Football League chief executive, initially joined Wrexham as an adviser in February 2021. He was formally appointed to the club's board of directors in December 2023 and has remained an influential figure behind the scenes throughout Wrexham's transformation. Harvey has also previously served as chief executive of Leeds United and managing director of Bradford City.
