Wolves Beat Villa Surpass Derbys Premier League Points Record

Wolves secured only their second Premier League victory of the season with a 2-0 win over Aston Villa, moving to 13 points and surpassing Derby County's record-low tally of 11 from the 2007-08 season. Goals from João Gomes and Rodrigo Gomes in the second half sealed the win, sparking celebrations from manager Rob Edwards, who ran down the touchline and punched an advertising hoarding in a moment of catharsis.

Villa manager Unai Emery, however, marched straight down the tunnel before the post-match handshakes, visibly frustrated. The defeat extends Villa's poor run, with just one win in their last six matches across all competitions and 12 points from their last nine league games. Emery acknowledged the setback, saying some supporters may have been dreaming of a title challenge, but insisted the objective remains staying in the Premier League.

João Gomes opened the scoring just after the hour, starting the move by nutmegging substitute Ross Barkley before firing home. Rodrigo Gomes doubled the lead deep into stoppage time on the counterattack, after Yerson Mosquera and José Sá combined to deny Amadou Onana. Morgan Rogers's failed attempt to recycle a corner led to Wolves attacking three against two, with Rodrigo Gomes swivelling near the penalty spot to beat Emiliano Martínez.

The match was played in driving rain on a saturated surface, leading to misplaced passes and clunky touches. Wolves defended admirably, with Jackson Tchatchoua halting Ian Maatsen and Toti Gomes stopping Leon Bailey. Despite struggling to hold possession, Wolves showed spirit and will go down fighting, as they did in a recent draw against league leaders Arsenal.
