Newcastle United secured a 2-0 victory away at Tottenham Hotspur, moving into the Premier League's Champions League places. Manager Matthias Jaissle insisted the Magpies will not get carried away with their strong start, but urged his players to enjoy the moment.
Jaissle keeps feet on the ground
For more than an hour, Newcastle struggled to register a shot on target before Anthony Elanga broke the deadlock. Yoane Wissa's overhead kick then sealed the win in front of over 3,000 travelling fans.
Jaissle said: "We have our own goals and we are clear with that. We are also realistic. Now you write everything is top, everything is great. We don't follow that too much. We are emotionally very stable and don't see the highs higher than it is now."
He added: "It is a moment to enjoy as well after that start, but we are also smart enough to see a long journey ahead of us and there will be challenges as well."
Wissa on stepping up after exits
Wissa, who had missed chances against West Brom and Liverpool earlier in the campaign, proved clinical when it mattered against Spurs. He spoke about the feeling in the dressing room following the departures of several players, including Sandro Tonali, who was booed during the match.
Wissa said: "Of course we lost so many players but the club worked well. It is challenging and we need players to step up, like me for instance, I didn't play last yeat and now I have a chance to play. So many players have to step up and enjoy the challenge and with the fans behind us nobody can stop us."
First opening away win in six years
The win marked Newcastle's first three points in their opening away game of a season since the Mike Ashley era, when goals from Jeff Hendrick and Callum Wilson earned a win at West Ham in an empty stadium during lockdown.
Jaissle, in charge for less than a month, will hope this is the first of many records broken as he settles into the role.
