The wife of Donegal All-Ireland winner James McHugh has died from injuries sustained in a road traffic collision in Cavan that killed her husband on Monday.
Noreen McHugh, who was in her 60s, was airlifted to Beaumont Hospital in Dublin with life-threatening injuries following the crash on the N3 at Drummallaght, between Virginia and Cavan, shortly before 2pm on Monday. She died on Tuesday evening.
James McHugh, 62, a key member of the Donegal side that won the All-Ireland title in 1992, was driving a car that collided with a van. He was pronounced dead at the scene, and his body was taken to Cavan General Hospital.
Gaelic football career
McHugh first played for Donegal in 1990 against Cavan, the same year the county won the Ulster title following victory over Armagh. Two years later, he was part of the historic Donegal squad that lifted the All-Ireland in 1992, alongside his brother Martin.
The forward was also awarded an All-Star that year. At club level, he won the championship with Cill Chartha in 1985, 1989, and 1993.
Garda appeal
In a statement on Tuesday evening, Gardaí confirmed the second death and renewed their appeal for witnesses. The collision involved a car and a van.
Gardaí are appealing to anyone who witnessed the collision or was travelling on the N3 between Virginia and Cavan, particularly between 1pm and 2pm, to come forward. Motorists with dashcam or other camera footage of the area are asked to make it available to investigating Gardaí.
