Hall of Fame third baseman Wade Boggs has announced he is cancer free, sharing the emotional news on social media on Friday. The 66-year-old former Boston Red Sox, New York Yankees and Tampa Bay Rays star revealed in September that he had been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
In a post on X, Boggs wrote: 'An extremely emotional day I can’t thank my doctor’s Dr. Engleman and Dr. Heidenberg enough also to everyone for your thoughts and prayers Debbie and I are pleased to announce I am cancer free.' When a fan responded with 'Base hit!', Boggs replied, 'Home run.'
Boggs had previously updated fans in November, saying he had undergone his last treatment for the disease. Despite his health battle, he continued to make appearances at autograph signings.
Boggs is widely regarded as one of the greatest third basemen in baseball history, alongside George Brett, Mike Schmidt and Brooks Robinson. He made 12 consecutive All-Star appearances from 1985 to 1996 and helped the Yankees win the World Series in 1996. His jersey has been retired by both the Red Sox and the Rays, and he is a member of both teams' Halls of Fame.
