Tuchel Reveals Rice and Saka's England Desperation Amid Injury Withdrawals
Tuchel: Rice and Saka Desperate to Play for England

Tuchel Details England Injury Crisis as Arsenal Trio Withdraw

England manager Thomas Tuchel has provided a candid insight into the injury withdrawals that have disrupted his squad ahead of Tuesday's friendly against Japan, revealing that Arsenal stars Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka were "desperate" to play despite being ruled out.

Medical Assessments Force Key Players Out

The German coach selected an expanded 35-man squad for this final camp before making his World Cup selection, but saw his plans hampered when Rice and Saka were among five players to withdraw following medical assessments. The Arsenal pair, along with teammate Noni Madueke, had joined the squad late after watching England's 1-1 draw with Uruguay at Wembley.

"They joined, had a medical assessment, wanted desperately to play, to just get the narrative straight," Tuchel emphasized regarding Rice and Saka. "Wanted desperately to be involved. But it made just no sense to take this risk."

The England boss explained that the timing of these injuries made participation particularly risky. "If it would have been maybe a last game of the season, we would have kept them and tried everything. But in this moment of the season, it did not make sense. The risk for making it worse was just way too big."

Dismissing Club-Over-Country Suspicions

With ten players from Premier League leaders Arsenal withdrawing from international duty in recent days, suspicions had emerged about clubs prioritizing their own interests over national teams. Tuchel firmly rejected such speculation, pointing to the players' evident commitment.

"They were both clearly in discomfort when we did the medical assessment, so it made absolutely no sense that they stayed," he stated regarding Rice and Saka's condition.

On Madueke, who started against Uruguay but left Wembley in a knee brace, Tuchel provided a slightly more optimistic assessment: "The assessment was then with a picture slightly better than his feeling, but he will be out for some days."

Additional Squad Concerns Emerge

The injury issues extended beyond Arsenal's contingent. Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton also withdrew with what Tuchel described as "more discomfort than a big injury," while Manchester City defender John Stones returned to his club with a calf problem.

Stones, who has made only five appearances since last playing for England in November, was due to start against Uruguay before picking up the injury. "It's not ideal," Tuchel admitted. "It's not ideal for John and not for us, of course, and John was gutted that he had this minor incident again."

Despite the setback, Tuchel maintained his faith in the experienced defender: "He has a lot of credit with me in the bank still. He is a key player for us, as a starter or as a substitute, because of his quality but also his mentality and the personality, and how he is as a character."

Seasonal Demands Take Their Toll

Tuchel acknowledged the disappointment of losing players but emphasized this was an inevitable consequence of the modern football calendar. "It's disappointing, but I'm not upset with the players. I'm not angry with the players," he said.

The England manager highlighted the players' dedication despite their physical limitations: "I got the feeling that everyone was desperate to come. Some of the injured players even stayed to do their treatment here, start their treatment here. That just shows me they want to be around the group."

Looking ahead to team selection for the World Cup, Tuchel maintained a pragmatic approach: "He's a big part in my plans still but like everyone he has to be fit. Once we make the team selection, he has to be fit and there is no big exception for that. Let's wait how it plays out."

The withdrawals have forced Tuchel to reconsider his options for the Japan friendly, with the manager now needing to assess which remaining players can step up in the absence of several key figures.
