Thomas Tuchel has agreed a deal to become the new England manager, with the Football Association confirming his appointment and planning an unveiling later this week. The German, who left Bayern Munich at the end of last season, will become just the third permanent foreign manager of the England team, following Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.
The FA has been searching for a successor since Gareth Southgate resigned after Euro 2024. Lee Carsley has been in interim charge, but made clear he would not take the job permanently after England's Nations League matches against Greece and Finland. Tuchel emerged as the leading candidate after FA chief executive Mark Bullingham and technical director John McDermott approached him last month.
Tuchel's managerial career includes spells at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund, Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea. He led Chelsea to four cup finals, including the Champions League, and also won the DFB-Pokal with Dortmund, two Ligue 1 titles with PSG and the Bundesliga with Bayern in 2023. The FA hopes his record with top players will help England progress from beaten finalists in the last two Euros to tournament winners.
The FA had previously contacted Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola, but with no answer forthcoming, they accelerated their pursuit of Tuchel. He is expected to oversee England's World Cup qualifying campaign after the draw in Geneva on December 13, though it is unclear if he will take charge of the final Nations League games next month.
England captain Harry Kane, who played under Tuchel at Bayern, praised him as a 'fantastic coach' and person, while former Tottenham manager Harry Redknapp expressed disappointment at the FA looking abroad, saying he would prefer an English manager. Carsley is expected to return to his role as under-21s coach.
