England manager Thomas Tuchel has publicly addressed the controversial situation surrounding Arsenal players withdrawing from international duty, acknowledging that the mass exodus appears "suspicious" while maintaining that key duo Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka are genuinely too injured to feature against Japan at Wembley on Tuesday evening.
Arsenal's International Exodus Raises Eyebrows
The situation has drawn significant attention after Rice and Saka returned to their club without playing a single minute for England, despite initially being expected to feature in Tuesday's friendly. The pair had reported for international duty and watched England's draw with Uruguay last Friday as part of a group given time off for that particular match.
Their weekend departure from the England camp, alongside club teammate Noni Madueke who sustained an injury during the Uruguay game, brings the total number of Arsenal players withdrawing from national team commitments worldwide to eleven. This mass withdrawal has raised serious questions, particularly given Arsenal's recent Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester City and their crucial Champions League first leg against Sporting Lisbon scheduled for next Tuesday.
Tuchel's Candid Assessment
Speaking to talkSPORT, Tuchel offered a remarkably candid perspective on the developing situation. "Everyone can do the math and it's a lot of players, of course," the England manager stated. "During the situation, it looks a bit suspicious but I can only talk for our players."
Tuchel was emphatic in his defense of Rice and Saka's integrity, despite the suspicious circumstances surrounding their club's international withdrawals. "I still have 100% trust in the honesty of Bukayo and Declan," he asserted. "We did medical tests. I saw them. I have no reason to believe that Declan is not honest with me. I have no reason to believe Bukayo is not honest. But given the amount of Arsenal players, I understand the look."
The Arsenal Injury List Grows
The scale of Arsenal's international withdrawals is substantial, with eleven first-team players now unavailable for their respective national teams:
- Martin Odegaard (Norway)
- Leandro Trossard (Belgium)
- William Saliba (France)
- Gabriel (Brazil)
- Jurrien Timber (Netherlands)
- Eberechi Eze (England)
- Declan Rice (England)
- Bukayo Saka (England)
- Noni Madueke (England)
- Piero Hincapie (Ecuador)
- Martin Zubimendi (Spain)
Injury Concerns for Arsenal's Crucial Fixtures
More worryingly for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, Tuchel revealed concerning news about the extent of these injuries, particularly regarding Madueke's condition. "Noni is out for some days and maybe some weeks," Tuchel disclosed, hinting that both Saka and Rice might face a race against time to be fit for Arsenal's Champions League clash with Sporting Lisbon.
"Everybody will be out for quite some days but not dramatically," Tuchel added, providing some reassurance while acknowledging the disruption. "It's disappointing, but I'm not upset with the players, I'm not angry with the players. I got the feeling that everyone was desperate to come. Some of the injured players even stayed to start their treatment here. That just shows me they want to be around the group."
Specific Injury Details Emerge
Tuchel provided specific insights into the nature of Rice and Saka's injuries, though he expressed reluctance to disclose full medical details. "I'm not sure if I want to give the nature of the injuries away. I think Arsenal would not be happy but Declan feels a discomfort since quite a while, and he's playing through it, and he's just now on the edge. It's the same with Bukayo."
The England manager revealed that Saka had been playing through significant pain during Arsenal's recent Carabao Cup final defeat. "He played in pain through the Carabao Final and we could see that he had not the same impact that he wishes to have for his club against Man City. You can see it and he confirmed it straight away. He tried with treatment in the three days to get rid of it and be ready but it's just too much of pain."
Tuchel emphasized his commitment to player welfare, stating definitively: "We will not push players now who are at 70 per cent through a friendly match."
England's Team Selection for Japan Friendly
With several key players unavailable, Tuchel confirmed he would field a strong side against Japan after England's experimental lineup struggled against Uruguay. Jude Bellingham will not be risked as he continues his recovery from a hamstring injury, but Tuchel is considering a start for Ben White at right-back as he reshuffles his defensive options.
The situation highlights the ongoing tension between club and country commitments, particularly during congested fixture periods when players are managing niggling injuries that require careful management. While Tuchel has expressed understanding of the suspicious appearance of Arsenal's mass withdrawals, his firm defense of Rice and Saka's integrity suggests he believes the club's medical assessments to be genuine, even if the timing raises legitimate questions.
