Tottenham and Newcastle conclude the second Saturday of Premier League action this season as both sides seek to build on midweek wins in the Carabao Cup. After a summer of optimism, Spurs were dealt a harsh reality check last week in their 3-0 defeat at the hands of Brentford but did bounce back immediately to thump London rivals Charlton.
Team news and early pressure
Savio, signed from Manchester City the day prior, made an instant impact on his debut and Tottenham fans will be hopeful Omar Marmoush can do the same against the team he loves to play against, while Sandro Tonali is set to face Newcastle for the first time since his £100million transfer.
It has been a difficult summer for the Magpies, losing a number of key players, but there were encouraging signs in the draw with Liverpool. Nico Gonzalez could make his debut as new head coach Matthias Jaissle experiences an away fixture in English football for the first time.
First half action
Spurs created the better chances in the opening 45 minutes. Marmoush was at the heart of everything, his quick feet opening up a chance for Porro to cross, but Hornicek claimed with Tel waiting to pounce. Tel and Porro were both heavily involved but their final action let them down.
At 44 minutes, fluid, flowing football from Spurs saw Marmoush find Gray, who delivered, but Dedic nodded behind for a corner that came to nothing. Newcastle had their moments too, with Miley switching for Barnes, who chested down for Hall, but the left-back slashed wide.
Second half underway
Spurs players and fans wanted a penalty as Thiaw made a clumsy challenge on Marmoush, but the referee and VAR said nothing doing. Newcastle were close again as Fernandes was penalised for a clip on Wissa, though the replay showed it was a dive.
At 54 minutes, Hornicek denied Tel with a good save. The match remained goalless as the second half progressed.
