Tottenham Supporters' Trust Raises Alarm Over De Zerbi Appointment
The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust has expressed profound unease regarding the club's decision to appoint Roberto De Zerbi as their new manager. This concern stems directly from De Zerbi's previous public statements in support of former Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood, which the Trust describes as potentially casting a dark shadow over the fundamental values of the football club.
Background of the Controversial Appointment
Roberto De Zerbi has officially signed a substantial five-year contract with Tottenham Hotspur, stepping into a high-pressure situation with the club perilously positioned just one point above the Premier League relegation zone, with only seven crucial matches remaining in the season. The Italian manager, known for his previous tenures at Brighton and Marseille, replaces the interim manager Igor Tudor, whose brief 44-day spell in charge was widely regarded as disastrous.
However, the appointment process was far from smooth. Several influential Tottenham supporters' groups, including the Proud Lilywhites, actively urged the club's hierarchy to reconsider appointing De Zerbi. Their primary objection centred on the manager's vocal backing of Mason Greenwood during his time in charge of French club Marseille. The Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust confirmed that these significant concerns were formally presented to the club's leadership during their deliberation over De Zerbi's candidacy.
The Mason Greenwood Context and De Zerbi's Comments
Mason Greenwood faced serious criminal charges in October 2022, including attempted rape, controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm, following allegations and the online dissemination of related images and videos. The Crown Prosecution Service subsequently dropped all charges in February 2023, citing the withdrawal of key witnesses and a lack of realistic prospect for a conviction.
In November of that year, while managing Marseille, Roberto De Zerbi publicly characterised Greenwood as a "good guy" who had paid a "heavy price". He further added, "It saddens me what happened in his life, because I know a totally different person than the one who was described." These remarks have become the focal point of the current controversy.
Supporters' Trust Statement and Core Concerns
In a strongly worded statement, the Tottenham Hotspur Supporters' Trust labelled De Zerbi's comments on Greenwood as "unnecessary, ill-judged, and deeply offensive to a significant number of supporters". The Trust emphasised that such statements would undoubtedly alarm victims of male violence.
The group warned that this appointment risks creating a damaging divide among the fanbase at a critical juncture when unity is essential to support the team in its relegation battle. They expressed dismay that the club would place supporters in this difficult position precisely when the team needs their backing the most.
"If those remarks reflect his genuine views, they cast a troubling shadow over the values of the club we love," the Trust stated. They have called on Tottenham Hotspur to publicly reassert its commitment to core values cherished by fans, including equality, respect, and integrity. Furthermore, they demand that any future communications from De Zerbi must clearly and unequivocally reaffirm these fundamental principles.
Club's Position and Fan Group Reactions
Tottenham Hotspur's management, including sporting director Johan Lange, acknowledged that De Zerbi's past support for Greenwood was considered and discussed during negotiations. Despite the controversy, the club confirmed De Zerbi as their "number one target for the summer" and expressed pleasure at securing his services ahead of schedule. In his own statement, De Zerbi insisted he is fully committed to the club's future ambitions.
The Trust, while recognising the limited availability of managers with recent Premier League experience and the urgent need to address the relegation threat, maintained that "this appointment raises serious and far-reaching concerns". They reported a surge of communication from fans urging them to convey the strength of feeling on this issue.
Echoing this sentiment, the Proud Lilywhites group stated following the appointment: "Whilst we disagree with the managerial choice, in terms of culture and competence, we will continue to support the players without pretending to be comfortable with the appointment." They emphasised that fans are the constant at the club, vowing to continue representing their members' views. "This is not noise or reaction. It is a considered position, and it is not going away," they concluded.
Tottenham Hotspur has been approached for further comment on the matter.
