Tottenham have agreed a club-record £100million deal to sign Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, with the Italian international set to undergo a medical and join Roberto De Zerbi's side on a long-term contract.
Standard Sport understands that Tottenham will pay £92.5million up front, with a further £7.5million in potential add-ons tied to multiple Champions League qualifications, bringing the total to £100million if all bonuses are met.
Fifth signing of the summer
Tonali becomes Tottenham's fifth signing of the summer transfer window, following the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke, Andy Robertson, Marcos Senesi and Martin Dubravka. Spurs have been aggressive in the market despite avoiding relegation on the final day of the Premier League season.
West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes is also expected to join Spurs after the two clubs agreed an £85million deal for the 21-year-old on Tuesday. Both Fernandes and Tonali are scheduled to undergo medicals in the coming days.
De Zerbi's project convinces Tonali
According to sources, Tonali was convinced by the project under De Zerbi, who aims to challenge for the top of the table after successive 17th-place finishes. Manchester City and Arsenal were also reportedly interested, but Tonali chose Spurs after multiple advances from the north London club.
Spurs sources have denied receiving a bid from Newcastle for Archie Gray, despite reports of a rejected offer. Tottenham hope to have Tonali and Fernandes involved when pre-season preparations begin on Friday, July 10.
