Takehiro Tomiyasu has emerged as a target for Ajax, five months after being released by Arsenal. The 27-year-old Japan international managed just six minutes of first-team football last season and has not played in 14 months due to injury.
Arsenal agreed to terminate his contract in July, despite his deal running until 2026. Tomiyasu had undergone knee surgery for the second time in three years. He joined the Gunners from Bologna in 2021 for £17 million, making 79 appearances under Mikel Arteta.
According to Dutch outlet Voetbal International, Ajax view Tomiyasu as a 'golden opportunity' to strengthen their defence. The Eredivisie side are currently fourth in the league and bottom of the Champions League table. Tomiyasu, who can play across the back line, is also attracting interest from other clubs.
Tomiyasu hopes to return to football and play at the 2026 World Cup. Coincidentally, Japan are in the same group as the Netherlands. He told DAZN Japan: 'We had a proper discussion and came to the conclusion that this decision is best for me, for the club, and for everyone. It all ended amicably.'
