Tiger Woods Hints at Masters Comeback Post TGL Loss

Tiger Woods Targets Masters Appearance Despite TGL Finals Setback

Tiger Woods has dropped a significant hint about his potential participation in next month's Masters tournament, despite suffering a brutal 9-2 defeat in the TGL Finals. The golf legend, who has been sidelined from competitive play since The Open in summer 2024, made his return to the sport in the virtual golf league he co-founded with Rory McIlroy.

Physical Recovery and Competitive Frustration

The 50-year-old Woods looked in promising physical condition during the match, demonstrating his power with several drives exceeding 300 yards. However, his performance for Jupiter Links couldn't prevent a comprehensive loss to Los Angeles Golf Club, who secured the best-of-three series with one game remaining.

"It was fine physically," Woods stated in a post-match press conference broadcast by Sky Sports. "I had a couple of drives I had to hit and a couple of putts... it was a lot of fun to be a part of it."

Despite the physical positives, Woods expressed clear frustration with the match outcome: "We got our a*** kicked at the end. Three eagles in a row, we didn't respond. I missed a short one to kind of get it started and give them momentum and we never got it back."

Masters Ambitions and Physical Challenges

Woods, who underwent back surgery last October and has battled multiple injuries including a ruptured Achilles tendon last spring, addressed his prospects for The Masters at Augusta National, which begins on April 9.

"I've been trying, this body doesn't recover like it did when I was 24, 25," Woods admitted. "It doesn't mean I'm not trying; I've been trying for a while. I've had a couple of bad injuries last year that I've had to fight through and has taken some time. I keep trying – I want to play."

The 15-time major champion emphasized his deep connection to the tournament: "I've loved the tournament, I've loved being there since I was 19 years old so it's meant a lot to me and my family over the years and I'm going to be there either way."

Woods concluded with cautious optimism: "We'll see how it goes. I'll be practising, playing, and keep trying to make progress. It feels good to be back but I would have liked it to be better circumstances. That's the way sport is – you put yourself out there and sometimes you win, sometimes you lose and you deal with it."

Match Breakdown and Opponent Perspective

The TGL Finals match saw Jupiter Links take an early 2-0 lead in the second game, but momentum shifted dramatically when Woods missed a crucial three-foot putt on the seventh hole. Los Angeles Golf Club, featuring English duo Tommy Fleetwood and Justin Rose, capitalized with three consecutive eagles from the eighth hole.

This decisive run culminated with Rose hitting a spectacular five-wood to four feet on the par-five 10th, prompting Jupiter to concede both the hole and the tournament.

Rose reflected on the remarkable finish: "They got off to a good start, fair play, but we were doing nothing tragic to second guess ourselves. You're not always going to go three eagles on the bounce, that's an insane way to finish and we've even taken ourselves by surprise there. It finished in a hurry which was good for us and a shame for everyone else here today."

Woods was substituted in for Kevin Kisner in the second match of the finals but couldn't reverse his team's fortunes after Monday's initial defeat. The loss confirmed Los Angeles Golf Club as TGL champions, while Woods continues his rehabilitation journey toward what he hopes will be a Masters appearance next month.
