Everton captain James Tarkowski has identified staying fit as the key to his form as the team prepares to respond to their first defeat of the season. The centre-back has been a mainstay in the side since joining the club in 2022 and is currently leading the Premier League in several defensive statistics.
Captain Eyes Response After Chelsea Setback
Tarkowski spoke to evertontv after the Blues lost 2-0 to Chelsea at Hill Dickinson Stadium on Saturday, ending an eight-match unbeaten run in all competitions. The defeat came despite a chaotic end to the summer transfer window that left Everton with a squad of just 18 outfield players, including only one recognised striker, right-back and left-back.
Looking ahead to the trip to reigning Premier League champions Arsenal, Tarkowski said: "I always felt last year that anytime we suffered a defeat, we responded pretty well. So, hopefully that happens [this weekend]. Hopefully, the team can keep picking up points. [Chelsea] was a tough day, a setback. We dealt with them pretty well last year, so we're looking forward to [the next match]."
Consistent Performer Tops Duels and Interceptions Charts
Since joining Everton on July 1, 2022, on a free transfer after his contract at Burnley expired, Tarkowski racked up 109 consecutive Premier League starts before suffering a hamstring injury against Manchester City on April 19 last year. He missed just one league game last season and has now played 30 or more Premier League matches in nine consecutive campaigns.
So far this term, Tarkowski, who turns 34 next month, tops the Premier League for successful duels with 57 and ranks second in the division for interceptions with 22. Discussing his form since officially taking over the captain's armband from Seamus Coleman, he said: "I feel good, I feel fit, I feel strong. It's been nice to have a full pre-season behind me to build into the season. The team is in a good place, I'm feeling good. I just want to continue playing week in and week out – that's the most important thing for me."
