Szoboszlai nears Liverpool return before Arsenal clash

Dominik Szoboszlai could hand Liverpool a major boost before their Premier League showdown against Arsenal. The midfielder, who scored the winning goal in the corresponding fixture last season, is a major doubt for Sunday’s clash at Anfield after missing five of Liverpool’s last six games.

Injury setback and recovery

Szoboszlai sustained a hamstring injury while on Nations League duty with Hungary and then suffered a recurrence of the same issue, which forced him off after just 32 minutes in Liverpool's comeback win over nine-man Brentford. The good news is that Szoboszlai has not made his existing problem any worse, though Andoni Iraola has, understandably, been cautious with rushing the midfielder back.

As such, the 26-year-old has watched wins over Villarreal, Brighton and Chelsea from the sidelines, but a return to action might not be far away.

Iraola's update on Szoboszlai

Upon delivering an update on Szoboszlai prior to beating Brighton, Iraola revealed the midfielder was already training alone and was expected to resume full training imminently. "Dom is going to be out this weekend. I don't think he's far but he hasn't trained with the group still," the Liverpool head coach said. "And also considering the other day that we started him and he had to go out, we will probably take one or two days more than we would last week."

"He's in a good place. Dom is already training outside alone and is going to train with the group, but he's not ready for this one."

Next steps for Liverpool

Since that update, Liverpool have been keeping things under wraps in terms of images from training sessions ahead of the Carabao Cup fourth-round penalty shootout win over Chelsea. With that said, Iraola is expected to provide a further update on Szoboszlai and the latest Liverpool team news in Friday’s pre-match press conference.
