Dominik Szoboszlai has moved to quash any lingering tension from his on-pitch exchange with Curtis Jones, insisting the matter is resolved and unlikely to recur. The Liverpool midfielder was involved in a heated discussion with Jones and Kostas Tsimikas during the 1-0 win over Wrexham in New York, a moment that quickly went viral on social media.
What Happened at Yankee Stadium
The flashpoint occurred after Rio Ngumoha's goal secured the victory, with Jones visibly frustrated at full-time. The disagreement was reportedly linked to Tsimikas being handed the armband following Szoboszlai's substitution in the second half. Liverpool insiders have downplayed the incident, attributing it to the competitive nature of an elite squad, and the players have since been seen sharing jokes.
Szoboszlai's Response
Speaking about the incident, Szoboszlai said: "It was never a debate between us three. We just discussed something on the pitch. What (which) actually after you guys make it very big. But next time we will manage to do it in the changing room. But no, nobody was angry at no one. It's all cleared. We are cool, everybody."
The Hungarian international also addressed speculation about a potential vice-captaincy role, admitting he would relish the opportunity to succeed Andy Robertson as deputy to Virgil van Dijk. "I was very proud moment to have it. And let's see. It's not my choice. It's not fixed. If you get offered the vice-captain in Liverpool FC, you're going to take it," he added.
Looking Ahead to the New Season
Szoboszlai expressed excitement for the upcoming campaign under new management, stating: "I can't wait, honestly. I feel that we are ready to go again and take motivation from the last season. Because as you said, it was not the best what we should do. We didn't end up there where we wanted to. So now we're going to go for it again."
He also praised new signings Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak, who made their first appearances in the defeat to Leeds United, saying: "Of course both of them are world-class players. With these kind of players I think everybody loves to play."
